Ulster rugby today announced signing of World Cup winning South African Number 8, Duane Vermeulen. The signing comes quite some time after Leone Nakarawa’s deal fell through following a failed physical. At the time head coach, Dan McFarland, noted that Ulster would not sign a player for the sake of an announcement and he has proven true to his word. The signings of both Mick Kearney and the newly announced Vermeulen are both players of great experience bringing knowledge to an ever more youthful Ulster line up. The Springbok is due to link up with Ulster after South Africa’s autumn internationals making November the awaited date. McFarland said of the recent signing: “Duane is clearly a world class player who, as the current World Champions’ starting 8 and MVP from the last RWC Final, is set to bring depth and experience to our really talented group of back rowers”. Vermeulen has signed the dotted line to stay with Ulster until 2023.
